Two ways to clean brick

Soft Wash vs Pressure Wash
On soft old mortar, pressure is the wrong tool

The High-Pressure Wand

Quick, and cruel to old joints

  • Chews open soft lime mortar
  • Drives water in behind the brick
  • Pops old paint loose in patches
  • Cleans the surface, leaves the roots alive
Bub's method

The Low-Pressure Soft Wash

Patience and chemistry over force

  • Pressure low enough for an old lime-mortar wall
  • Kills algae and mildew at the root
  • Kind to old paint and soft brick
  • No hard stream digging at the joints

No surprises, straight answers

The questions Newberry homeowners
actually ask

No, and protecting them is built into the job rather than tacked on. We wet down the plantings at the base of the wall before the first pass and rinse them clean after the last one. Mature beds took years to grow in, so they get treated like part of the house.

It is, as long as force stays out of the picture. Brick from that era was fired softer than modern brick, and the lime mortar holding it is softer still. So our wash runs at low pressure and lets the cleaning solution do the work, and we're not taking the hard pass that carves and chips old walls.

Inside for the duration is all we ask. The mix is diluted and gets rinsed off everything it touches, and once the wall and the ground have dried, the yard is back to normal for paws and noses.

Because that wall stays damp the longest. A north-facing wall under old trees can hold morning moisture into the afternoon, and the damp side feeds the growth first, while the sunny side dries fast and starves it out. Our wash kills the growth at the root on that shaded side, so it has to start from scratch instead of bouncing right back.

No, that one's minerals, and we'll be straight with you about it. It's called efflorescence, salts carried out of the masonry as moisture moves through it. A wash may lighten it, but it won't fully lift, and it can show up again while the wall keeps breathing. You'll know before we start what will rinse away and what won't.

Yes to both, and on this kind of work it's worth asking. Soft old mortar doesn't forgive a hard pass, and a wall that's stood for generations deserves a crew with real coverage and a gentle plan. That's the crew we send.

How booking works

From your call to a firm number

You won't get a price for old brick over the phone from us, and that's on purpose. Here's how it goes.

1

Call or send the form and mention what's on the wall, green growth, white bloom, or aging paint. That's enough to get things moving.

2

Careful masonry work isn't something we squeeze between quick jobs. Your wash gets a slot where slow and gentle has all the time it needs.

3

Before anything is quoted, a tech looks at the brick up close, checks the joints and any paint, and sorts what's alive from what's mineral.

4

You get a firm price in person after we've seen the brick, free. If part of a stain needs a specialty treatment instead of a wash, we'll say so before anything is booked.

Questions, answered

Common Newberry brick cleaning questions

Every brick street in it. We wash brick from Main Street through the downtown blocks and out into the older neighborhoods and mill village streets around them.

Painted or bare, most brick here does well washed about every couple of years. A wall in deep shade under old trees may green up sooner, while a sunny exposure can stretch longer. When we walk your wall we'll say which end yours sits on.

Yes, and it gets our gentlest handling. Old paint on brick can lift if you push it, so we keep the pressure low and try a small hidden patch first. There's a lot of painted masonry around the Opera House blocks, and it cleans up beautifully when it's treated with patience.

Yes, both. Chimneys catch shade and stay damp, so they green up first, and foundation brick picks up red clay splash after a hard rain. The growth washes off, but the clay is a mineral stain, so a wash may lighten it, but the real fix is a separate treatment, and we tell you that up front.

It's safe done our way. We flag the crumbly spots before we start, keep the pressure down low, and let the cleaning solution do the lifting. What ruins soft mortar is a hard stream digging at it, and that's the one thing we don't bring.

Yes. Storefront masonry is some of the oldest brick in town, and it gets the same patient low-pressure wash a house does. We can work around business hours, and we'll point out anything on the wall that needs a mason instead of a wash.

Brick Cleaning in Newberry, the City of Friendly Folks

Why Newberry homeowners call us

Here's the mistake that turns a brick wash into a masonry bill: pointing a high-pressure wand at a wall that's older than the machine aimed at it. Much of the brick around downtown and streets like Vincent Street sits in soft lime mortar, and that mortar is the weakest thing on the wall. A hard stream can chew a joint open in seconds and push water in behind the brick, where it sits and does quiet harm. We wash old brick the other way around. Low pressure, patient chemistry, and the joints left alone to keep doing their job.

Newberry is an old inland mill town on the rolling red-clay hills of the lower Piedmont, about forty-five minutes up I-26 from Columbia. The housing tells its story: wood-sided mill houses in the West End, Mollohon, and Oakland villages, Victorian and Queen Anne homes along Main Street and College Street, and brick ranches from the decades after the war. There is no lake or river in town; what ages these exteriors is shade, humidity, and time. Mature trees hang over the older streets, north-facing walls stay damp into the afternoon, and painted wood and soft old brick hold that moisture longer than modern siding does. Around Newberry College and the Opera House, downtown blocks mix storefront masonry with some of the oldest painted exteriors in the county.

In Main Street, Oakland, and the West End, or anywhere else around Newberry, we come to you for brick cleaning, no trip fee.

While we're at your Newberry place, we can knock out your house washing, roof cleaning, and window cleaning too, all on the same trip with no second trip fee.

Our process, step by step

What a careful brick wash looks like

Old brick asks for a slower hand than new construction. Here's the order we work in and why each piece matters.

We look over the joints, the paint, and any past patchwork first. Soft or crumbly spots get flagged so the wash works around them, not over them.

Shrubs and flower beds at the base of the wall get wet down before we start and rinsed again after. Pets and kids head inside until we're done.

The cleaning solution goes on at low pressure and gets time to work into the growth. The kill happens down at the root, which is why the green stays away longer than it does after a plain rinse.

A soft top-down rinse carries everything off without driving water at the joints. If a white mineral bloom or a clay mark stays behind, we name it and we say so before we quote it, along with what a wash can and can't do about it.
