Most decks here do well with a wash about every year-and-a-half to two years. Deep shade shortens that some, since boards that stay damp gray faster. Watch the side that gets the least sun, and when the silver cast starts creeping back, it's time.
Not the same day, and for a good reason. The wood needs a couple of days to dry after the wash before any color goes on. Stain or seal is its own visit, and we're glad to line it up while we're standing there.
Slightly, yes. Composite gets the same low-pressure clean but skips the brightener, since that step exists to restore tone in real wood. The boards come out clean without a step the material has no use for.
We can lighten a surface drip, and only so much. Grease soaks into wood the way it soaks into a paper plate, so a deep spot may barely move. That's a separate treatment from the wash, and we'll tell you up front what we honestly expect it to do.
Have us look first. Spongy usually means rot, and no wash fixes structure. If it's limited, we can clean the deck and you swap the bad boards before any stain. If it's spread through the frame, we'll say so and point you to a repair first instead of taking your money.

Our process, step by step
How the wood comes back, step by step
On a deck the chemistry does the work and the pressure stays out of the way. Here's the order we run it in on a shaded backyard deck.
We shift the furniture and planters off, wet down the beds and shrubs around the deck, and keep them damp while we work. Then the boards get looked over for popped nails and soft spots so nothing surprises either of us.
An oxygen-based cleaner goes on and gets worked in with a soft brush, all at low pressure. It releases the dead gray fiber and the mildew down in the grain, so the mess rinses away instead of getting carved off.
A wood brightener neutralizes the cleaner and opens the tone back up, so the boards dry even and warmer across the whole run. This is the step that takes the wood from just clean back to looking like wood.
We rinse the deck down gentle and give the beds a last flush on the way out. The wood then needs a couple of days to dry, and if you want stain or seal, that's a separate visit we'll line up whenever you're ready.
